The Monroe County Board of Commissioners sends its deepest condolences to the family of former county clerk Gail King, who passed away on Friday, April 16.
King was employed by Monroe County from 1986-2006, beginning as an administrative assistant before being promoted to deputy clerk in 1989. King was then promoted to county clerk in 1993, a position she maintained for the next 13 years until her 2006 retirement. After her retirement, she then came back for two more brief stints with the county, most recently in 2018 when she served as interim county manager prior to the hiring of current county manager Jim Hedges.
Monroe County Commission Chairman Greg Tapley said of King: “She was a long-serving and valuable member of the team in all of the times she worked for the county. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her. She was professional and firm and always well-liked.”
Former District 1 County Commissioner Larry Evans, who worked alongside King for nearly two decades, said King was a very efficient, detail-oriented county clerk.
“She was very attentive, very approachable on anything,” Evans said of King. “If you had a question, she would go over it with you. She would also admit when she didn’t have an answer, which not everyone will do.”
Evans said he never had to worry about King doing what commissioners instructed. He said she kept a regular log of responsibilities and activities to make sure she stayed on task. Evans also said King consistently adhered to the county’s standard operating procedures and would not deviate from following the rules.
“Her devotion was to the best interest of the county,” Evans said. “She was a pleasure to work with. She had the right attitude with people. Gail was a treasure for this county.”
Monroe County Memorial Chapel handled King’s arrangements. Her funeral was held on Sunday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Click the below link to view King’s full obituary.
