A Boil Water Advisory is being issued for all residents on the North Monroe County Water System. This advisory is being issued due to a failed motor starter at the Butts County Water System plant that has negatively affected Monroe County’s water supply and could cause low water pressure in areas. The advisory applies to any residences on Johnstonville Road and north of Johnstonville Road other than the River Forest, Riata, and River Walk subdivisions.
The advisory is being issued out of an abundance of caution. In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, customers that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking or preparing food.

The Monroe County Water Department and H2O Innovations, the county’s water management firm, were notified on Sunday, May 14 by Butts County water officials about the issue. Monroe County’s north water system is supplied by the Butts County Water Department. Butts County water officials are working on repairing the motor starter, but a timetable for its repair is not yet known.
In the meantime, Monroe County leaders made an emergency decision on Monday to close off temporarily the north water system’s service with Butts County and instead connect to the City of Forsyth’s water system via fire engine hoses from Monroe County Emergency Services (MCES). This is the same process that was used in December 2022 when frozen water lines resulted in a loss of pressure in the Butts County Water System, forcing Monroe County to seek assistance from the City of Forsyth. North Monroe County water system customers are not expected to experience water outages as a result of the transfer.
However, we are continuing to urge Monroe County’s north water system customers to limit their water usage over the next several days to extend the system’s supply for as long as possible.
The water shortage does not impact Monroe County’s south water system, which is serviced by Macon Water Authority, so south system users can continue to consume water at the same rate as normal.
