Monroe County is pleased to announce it has received $6 million in funding for Water and Sewer Infrastructure as part of federal COVID-19 relief funding that will provide $422 million worth of water and sewer grants to dozens of Georgia cities and counties.
According to a release from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s office, Gov. Kemp made the announcement today (Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022) while joined by members of the Water and Sewer Infrastructure Committee, which includes State Rep. Robert Dickey, the Chairman of the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee. Members of the Water and Sewer Committee evaluated the applications.
Monroe County submitted its application in 2021, highlighting the county’s two-year-long efforts to expand its water system to Juliette to bring safe drinking water to the area affected by uranium, radon and hexavalent chromium in private wells. The original project cost was budgeted at $16.3 million. However, due to rising construction costs, the project total rose to more than $23 million, leaving Monroe County with an approximate shortfall of $7 million. In its application, Monroe County requested funding assistance to help close the funding gap.
